iTunes Review

In but a few busy months, Canada-born composer Christophe Beck went from underscoring the song-dominated soundtracks for the megahit Frozen and Muppets Most Wanted to producing this, his first action-film score. His initial reaction? “It was quite terrifying, actually!,” Beck confides. Having built his career via Buffy the Vampire Slayer and many successful comedies, Beck credits director Doug Liman with “pushing me to find unconventional ways to approach scenes musically.” Beck mirrored the repetitive time-travel/Groundhog Day nature of Tom Cruise’s struggling future soldier with music that’s “disoriented and chaotic at first but gaining in assertiveness until this "super-soldier" sequence, by which time the score has evolved into something very assertive and confident. At first I tried all manner of more traditional heroic themes, with the type of writing you’d expect for horns or trumpets. But in the end, as always, Doug preferred a nontraditional approach, driven by percussion and distorted orchestra.”

Not Your Average Soundtrack

Christophe Beck is starting to prove that he can go beyond normal conventions for movie scores. Listening extensively to Brian Tyler, Trevor Rabin, and Henry Jackman soundtracks gives someone a good taste of the action-norm for film soundtracks. However I can honestly say that this soundtrack shatters all of those expectations, sometimes with a new take on an old synthesized beat or orchestration technique, other times with a quick turn of a musical phrase. There is much to listen to and much to be enjoyed. From the "Main Titles" to the "Live. Die. Repeat (End Titles)", this is an album worthy of anyone's library.

Great soundtrack, missing Paul Newman's song...

A well done music score to a good movie (& yes I have read the original novel!) but it doesn't include Paul Newman's "Love Me Again" from the closing credits. Little disappointed that I had to buy that track separately from this album.

Christophe Beck did a great job on this movie with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The music fit perfectly. Well done!!👏 It was an amazing film.
