Album Review

Following his 2012 full-length The Midsummer Station, Owl City songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Adam Young issued his next small batch of new material with the four-song EP Ultraviolet. The brief offering followed the trend of electro-pop songwriting and increasingly polished songwriting set by the full-length that preceded it, with production duties handled in full by Young himself. Ultraviolet's high point was first song and subsequent single "Beautiful Times," a bounding pop track marked by soaring string arrangements from guest violinist Lindsey Stirling, known to many as a quarterfinalist on the 2010 season of television's America's Got Talent.

Based of the samples

As this album is not yet released, I have only heard the samples. However, that alone is enough to realize that Adam may have decided to change his style drastically. Drifting away from the quirky and upbeat lyrics, scattered with puns, the songs in "Ultraviolet" seem a lot darker and appear to hold much more emotional weight.

Amazing as always. Been a fan since the beginning. It's been awesome watching his sound evolve but still have the same magical lyrics and imagery that he has always kept in his music. It's an oasis from reality.

Not bad

It's not the same original owl city, but it's way better then the owl city in the midsummer staycation. Great job owl city

He eventually combined those diversions into a blend of electronica and emo-pop, using little more than his computer and various keyboards to record the material. Songs were uploaded to MySpace...
