Editors’ Notes

As the more experimental brother in Oasis, Noel Gallagher is now exploring exciting new avenues with High Flying Birds, a band as flexible as whatever a track calls for. Brass, strings, Mellotron, a choir; whatever it takes is brought to sonic perfection by Gallagher’s longtime producer Dave Sardy, who nudged Gallagher to take his demos to a real Los Angeles studio. Traces of The Kinks can be heard in the ramshackle “The Death of You and Me,” “Soldier Boys and Jesus Freaks,” and “Dream On,” which revisits Ray Davies’ “Sunny Afternoon” and “Dead End Street.” There’s a grand scope to tunes like “(I Wanna Live in a Dream in My) Record Machine” and “Everybody’s on the Run.” Where Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye stuck to Lennon-centric guitar-based rock, Noel’s insights are gentler, lusher, and completely satisfying, as the hooks of “AKA . . . What a Life!” and “If I Had a Gun . . .” make abundantly clear. The deluxe edition includes the deliciously dreamy “Let the Lord Shine a Light on Me,” the driving “The Good Rebel,” and the essential “A Simple Game of Genius,” which ranks among his best tunes.

The Chief is back

Amazing debut solo album, Mr. Gallagher still proves to be one of the greatest songwriters of our time.

Great solo from the Oasis back-man

Noel, wow! Some big shoes to fill in this debut solo act coming off Oasis. We always knew Noel could write and his singing, while not epic has always been solid. But for some reason the freedom of being solo seems to have won out over the pressure. Everything seems to work here. A nice set of songs for former Oasis fanatics or anyone who doesn't know Noel or doesn't care. And isn't that the way music should always sound?

Didn't see this coming. I always loved Noel, and Liam being a douche away got on my nerves, so when this album came out and blew Beady Eye out of the water, I was satisfied. Noel's vocals are pretty impressive; always liked "Don't Look Back In Anger" more than most Oasis songs, and this album is bunch of songs that I would put close to that level. The closing song, apparently a "long lost" recording of Oasis', really put a bow on the end of this album and made me love it. 5/5, due to the great voice, songwriting, and simple instrumentation. Just a classic "rock-n-roll" sound that you'd expect from Noel Gallagher.

Formed: 2010 in Manchester, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '10s

Having left Oasis the previous year after a typically turbulent, backstage row with brother Liam at Manchester's Heaton Park, the eldest Gallagher sibling's first official foray into a "solo" career took off in 2010 with Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, featuring the talents of Gallagher, former Oasis keyboard player Mike Rowe, Lemon Trees drummer Jeremy Stacey, and percussionist Lenny Castro. Cut from the same arena-sized, melodic Brit-pop cloth as the band he helped bring to prominence in the...
