EDITORS’ NOTES

Noel Gallagher’s first solo record rests on the pleading sob in his voice. From the orchestral filigrees of “Everybody’s On the Run” onward, he begs and cajoles over the bullish backdrop of polished ’60s-style Brit rock. “The Death of You and Me” is a swaggering Kinks ragtime with New Orleans trombones, while “If I Had a Gun…” is another of Noel’s 3 a.m. redemption ballads. The biggest surprise is the pounding, house-influenced “AKA… What a Life!”, adding a touch of disco (but with Mellotron strings).
