iTunes Editors’ Notes

Dolly Parton is still a serious musical force on 2014’s Blue Smoke, her 42nd studio album. Her covers of Bob Dylan (“Don’t Think Twice”), the traditional “Banks of the Ohio” and Bon Jovi’s (!) “Lay Your Hands On Me” prove she’s both steeped in tradition as well as open to new challenges. The duets with Kenny Rogers on “You Can’t Make Old Friends” and Willie Nelson on “From Here To the Moon and Back” fill the nostalgic quotient of the album with true tearjerkers from each of their previous albums. “Home” is brash country pop, while the title track and “Unlikely Angel” hew to sounds of bluegrass and country without attempting anything too contemporary. “Miss You-Miss Me” is an affecting acoustic ballad that’s remarkable for just how strong and nuanced Parton’s voice is after all these years. Filling out the album with “If Had Wings,” “Lover du Jour” and “Try” tips the album nicely into country.

Smokin' HOT!

Great collection of songs! Her voice appears much stronger on this album compared to her last. My favorite track is Lay your hands on me. I wish that this would have been her first single. Her version makes you want to get up and dance. Next is Home. Great song and probably the most radio friendly of the collection. This song sounds like Taylor Swift could have written and sung it herself. Lover du jour! Wonderful, clever, funny and very catchy. Would love to see a video of this one. Don't think twice and If I had wings are both great additions to the album as well. Blue smoke is a fun song. I've always enjoyed her packing up and leaving songs. I was very happy to see Unlikely angel on the album. I loved the Christmas movie and always thought she should record it. Least favorite (but still great) are Banks of the Ohio, Miss you-miss me, and Try. They felt more like filler songs than stand alone additions. 5 Stars because its a great album, because it's Dolly Parton and because she deserves it!

Always the best!

The queen of country, TRUELY is Dolly Parton. Love you Dolly!

Loved the new songs, but enjoyed hearing Unlikely Angel and The Banks of the Ohio. Not a bad song on the album...Favorite is From here to the Moon and Back. Beautiful message in Try. Great album.

It's difficult to find a country performer who has moved from her country roots to international fame more successfully than Dolly Parton. Her autobiographical single "Coat of Many Colors" shows the poverty of growing up one of 12 children on a rundown farm in Locust Ridge, Tennessee. At 12 years old, she was appearing on Knoxville television; at 13 she was recording on a small label and appearing on the Grand Ole Opry. Her 1967 hit "Dumb Blonde" (which she's not) caught Porter Wagoner's ear, and...
