Album Review

After being dropped by Sire/Warner Bros. in 1991, Richard X. Heyman went six long years before recording another CD. When his third album, the superb Cornerstone, was released, it was clear that the New Yorker's singing and writing hadn't deteriorated a bit during his absence from the studio. Heyman's influences still ranged from Elvis Costello and Tom Petty to the Byrds, and continued to demonstrate how rewarding power-pop and jangly guitar rock can be on songs ranging from the dispirited "Out of My Hands" and the nostalgic "When It Was Our Time" to the exuberant "Ask Anyone Who's Tried," the reflective "From This Day Forever," and the poignant "All I Have." On some of the songs, Heyman plays all of the instruments himself, and he is heard on everything from guitar, piano, and bass as well as drums. An artist this talented should not be neglected.

One of the best albums no one knows about

I'm writing today sept 14 2013 because i read in Uncut magazine (my all-time fav music mag) that he's coming out with a new album. I bought Cornerstone when it first came in '98 and was floored. I actually went to NYC and spent some time with him and his partner (Nancy I think) and more cats (animals) than I've ever seen in one apartment. Every song on this album is great. Richard is to POP what Ryan Adams (Whiskeytown and early solo albums) was to '70's country rock. It seems like you've heard every song before…in a good way. Drawing as Ryan did from all his favorite sources he created a magnificent body of work here…that no one seemed to get. I for one am really looking forward to the new album rated by Uncut very highly. I'm thrilled to see him get the recognition he deserves. On this album, there's hints of The Byrds, Moody Blues, and so much more. Sample things songs starting with the title song. You won't be disappointed.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Richard X. Heyman is one of the sadly overlooked pop craftsmen of the '90s, but his albums are widely regarded in power pop circles as instant classics. Heyman began recording in the late '80s in the tradition of the studio nerd/one-man band, playing all instruments himself in his upper west side Manhattan apartment living room, named Brontasaurus, presumably after the classic song by the Move. He released the independent Actual Size EP in 1987 and followed with the full-length Living Room!! in 1988....
