Editors’ Notes

Released 10 years after 12 Play, Chocolate Factory didn't just confirm R. Kelly’s enduring relevance to the notoriously fickle R&B scene; it demonstrated a range of personal contradictions. In his music, Kelly sometimes dealt with the conflict between the church and the bedroom that had plagued Marvin Gaye and so many singers before him. Within the course of Chocolate Factory, he's in turns sincere and self-effacing, willfully generic and equally idiosyncratic, a family-friendly pop star and an unrepentantly vulgar R&B thug. The most amazing thing is that Kelly can pull it all off without getting trite or transparent. A musical soap opera in eight minutes, “Showdown” casts Ron Isley as Kelly’s foil for a song that epitomizes the album’s innovative approach to song structure. In the end, though, Chocolate Factory is all about “Step in the Name of Love,” “Ignition,” and their equally essential remixes. The unforced craftsmanship of these songs is evident, but more importantly they brought a newfound sense of playfulness—even mischievousness—to a genre that's often bogged down by self-seriousness.

Kelly and his supporting band Public Announcement began recording in 1992 at the tail-end of the new jack swing era, yet he was able to keep much of its sound alive while remaining commercially successful. While he created a smooth, professional mixture of hip-hop beats, soulman crooning, and funk, the most distinctive element of Kelly's music is its explicit carnality. He was able to make songs like "Sex Me," "Bump n' Grind," "Your Body's...
