EDITORS’ NOTES

Pins of Light’s debut album opens with “4112,” providing the answer to the hypothetical question “What would it sound like if Lemmy had taken over Hawkwind?” Frontman Shane Baker attacks the bass and larynx with a feral abandon much like the Motörhead leader—a very different approach than his glass-shattering falsettos previously heard in the Camaro-metal stylings of the band Night After Night. Guitarist Jake Palladino imports giant walls of sonic sludge from his other band, Hightower, adding elements of cacophonous space rock. Equal parts Black Flag and Black Sabbath, “My Revenge” rubs big, distorted doom riffs against the grain of full-throttled hardcore tempos as Baker howls in the distance like an alpha wolf leading his pack into battle. At nearly seven minutes, “Sound & Pressure” breaks the punk rules of short song lengths to deliver a near-psychedelic mini-epic.
