Editors’ Notes

Ex-Pantera’s Phil Anselmo knows no compromise, so fans can be ensured that any release bearing his name will feature Anselmo’s complete commitment. Down began as a side-project but nothing about the group suggests they tossed it off. Much has happened in the five years since Down II and most of it was not good. Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell was murdered. Hurricane Katrina knocked out the group’s home city and Anselmo went through triple fusion back surgery and worked through grueling physical therapy to relearn how to walk. (He had already previously conquered an addiction to painkillers). With this backstory, it’s no surprise that Over the Under is so tight and focused. Anselmo’s singing is deeper and more soulful than previous recordings, as the ‘70s-styled burners such as “Never Try” and “N.O.D.” kick into glorious sludge territory, while “The Tides” slides towards psychedelia. These are slow, solid rhythms where the riffs, provided by Corrosion of Conformity’s Pepper Keenan and Crowbar guitarist Kirk Windstein, barrel past in tandem punches and in rich layers that make Down’s 2007 entry a far more complex entity than their previous releases.

Customer Reviews

Different yet the same, in a great way

Each album from Down has the band's signature southern tone, but each has its own unique feel at the same time. This is one of those few albums you can start on track 1 and not bother touching skip until all songs have played. Notable songs include: Never Try, Nothing in Return, On March the Saints, and N.O.D. Regardless of what you read from the low rating posters that compare the band to such bands as Avenged Sevenfold or even Pantera, Down is like no one else which means not everyone will like them. The fact is, if you liked Down I or II then you will no doubt be thankful you purchased this album. Influences from Sabbath and Skynyrd can be heard throughout the album, but the most important thing is that Phil and the other members didn't set out to be commercially accepted like some other bands *coughA7X* *coughAtreyu*. You can sample the songs on here, but to appreciate the music completely you need to hear each song from start to finish.

Worth the money, worth the wait!!!

Buy this album! More than worth the wait. After Dime's murder Phil took a break from music but sprang back like a boxer clean (except herb) and sober. It shows in his singing. The rest of the band is in rare form on this offering. Its great to see Down back with a new album and touring after Katrina hit home. Like I said the singing is great, the guitars are blues with metal crunch, and Jimmy Bower always tears the drums up. Great live show also, I hope to catch them again this year. Go out and buy this album, or buy it here. It is a must own for any fan of old school rock, metal, blues, or just good music.

Worth the wait

With songs like the amazing Pillamyd and the mellow yet powerful, Nothing in Return, this album delivers. Gone are the guttural groans of the mighty Phil Anselmo and replaced with a just as intense, yet matured, Jedi-like vocalist if you will. Already Pillamyd has taken me through half a dozen workouts and I suspect many more. Kudos to Phil and the crew for doing what they do best. Very much looking forward to seeing you guys later this year at your Los Angeles venue. It may not be Pantera, we will never get Pantera again, but we have Down.
