This eccentric rock material, all in English, shows the diversity of her vocal instrument.

A True Masterpiece

I first heard Smack Jack by Nina Hagen while dancing at a punk club (The Met — Portland, Oregon in 1982) and was transfixed. Soon after I dropped by Dudley's record store in downtown Portland to find in its then very limited import music section (this was before the word 'alternative' became a marketing term in the early 90s to describe what came before it — the then uncategorized REAL underground music.

NUNSEXMONKROCK stood out on the new release wall like nothing I had ever seen before, with Nina and her baby Cosma Shiva gazing out to me as some dark madonna and child. While I had been rapidly devouring as much underground/punk music as possible, the profane title of her album both stunned and thrilled me. I grabbed a copy and ran out the door. Later that evening my father would respond in parental horror at the thought of my sister sitting with me in my bedroom as "Born in Xixax" blared from my stereo speakers …

30 years later I still listen to this completely original masterpiece on the vinyl I purchased and it never disappoints. From the opening track — the exhilarating and frightening "Antiworld" which is followed up by the delightfully dance friendly "Smack Jack" and then continues through a set of absolutely unique listening experiences that place this album completely out of time. Nothing before and nothing since has come close to the originality of this recording which I cannot more highly recommend. Nina made a number of good albums but nothing compares to this small piece of art.

When I look at the last 30+ years and see the rehashed shock dreck of the Marilyn Manson's and Lady Gaga's of the world — all I can say is Nina did it SO much better than any of them would ever even attempt. Rare do I feel that a musician is an artist — Nina is the true exception with NUNSEXMONKROCK as her ultimate creative expression.

This CD is coupled with her 10" EP "Nina Hagen Band TV-Glotzer (White Punks on Dope)" — a delightful rarity, albeit the by combining the artwork of the two recordings one misses the full impact of NUNSEXMONKROCKs beautiful and profane album cover in its surreal entirety.

Miss Hagen's magnum opus

While not one of her most famous releases, Nunsexmonkrock was truly the only album Nina ever put out that really felt like it came directly from her. Stripped of trend-bending production and overtly-religious messages, Nina could simply bear her soul. A masterpiece that incorporates no less than 10 genres, Nunsexmonkrock ne'er feel cluttered nor tiring.

One of my favorite albums ever, I'm so glad it has finally been put on iTunes for everyone to enjoy. Now, I can only hope that this is the start of the rereleasing of her entire catalogue!

Brilliant Artist's best album.

This was the soundtrack to my moving to and living in the great City of San Francisco back in the early 80s. Nina is a brilliant singer and songwriter and was really at her peak when this album was recorded. Trained in opera, she went another way and brought brilliance with her. I was tremendously blessed to see her in concert not once but twice. Nina is very much underserved by her various recording labels as far as CD or digital file re-releasing. The greatest hits album released a few years ago is a nice selection of songs, but the mixes are crappy especially in the high end. If there is an artist that needs a first class remastering and re-release of her albums, it is Nina Hagen.

Born in East Germany, Nina Hagen had already gained a reputation as a flamboyant rock singer by the time she emigrated to the West in 1976, where she formed a band, signed to CBS Germany, and released the debut album Nina Hagen Band in 1978. It was followed in 1980 by Unbehagen. Hagen's first U.S. release, Nina Hagen Band EP (1980), was a four-song EP consisting of songs drawn from her two German releases. She moved to New York and made her first English-language LP, Nunsexmonkrock, in 1982. That...
