A Great Album That Went Unnoticed

By 1990, Gwen Guthrie's career had fizzled. Unfortunately, for both the singer and the public, "Hot Times" was an ignored CD. An opportunity for Warner Brothers, her label at the time, to revive her career was missed. "Hot Times" contained probably the strongest material the songstress had ever recorded. A few R&B stations picked up on the infectious initial single "Sweet Bitter Love". However, because of no promotion, the song quickly faded into obscurity. This CD had everything, Soul, Funk, Hip-Hop, Pop and could have been huge hit. Even her reading of Stephanie Mills' "Never Knew Love Like This" was attention-grabbing. Despite top-notch material, outstanding vocals, very strong production and a syrupy wedding ballad with George Benson ("I'll Give My Best To You"), Guthrie was dropped from Warner Brothers after this CD failed to chart. Sadly, it would be her final CD before her untimely death in 1999. This is one of my favorite CDs by any artist and I'm elated that I-tunes has made this available to those of you who may have missed this during it's original release.

what a great cd

A Gem

It is beyond my understanding why Gwen Guthrie's career faded away. Literally one of the most talented vocalist of her era, Gwen was unnoticed. This is a must for her fans as well as for those who need that introduction to one of the best vocalist to ever record. You won't be disappointed!

Born: 1950 in Newark, NJ

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s

Gwen Guthrie is best known for her number one R&B single "Ain't Nothin' Goin' on But the Rent," a popular self-written bouncer. A prolific songwriter and a good pianist, she also penned "Supernatural Thing" for Ben E. King and "This Time I'll Be Sweeter" for Martha Reeves, which was later popularized by Angela Bofill and Issac Hayes. In all, Guthrie logged approximately 50 compositions, and many thought Guthrie and songwriting partner Patrick Grant had the potential to become another Ashford & Simpson....
