iTunes Editors’ Notes

Though most of their big hits in the ’80s were written outside of the band (“Manic Monday,” “Walk Like an Egyptian,” “Eternal Flame”) this foursome defined Southern California in so many ways; their sunshine pop and well-crafted harmonies were worthy of women whose girlhood record collections were crammed with Beach Boys singles and Emitt Rhodes albums. Their musical verve summoned all sorts of images and sounds, from late-’70s power pop at the Whiskey a Go Go (“Hero Takes a Fall”) to wind blowing through palm trees overlooking the Pacific Ocean (“I’ll Set You Free”) to some ’60s Laurel Canyon folk-out (“Following”).

Customer Reviews

The Cover of Paul Simon's Hazy Shade of Winter is definitive

They were very talented and mostly pure pop - with Prince's Manic Monday a fine example of that. The cover of Simon's Hazy Shade of Winter is inspired and it should be a part of any serious rock collection. There is nothing wrong with the polished works of these talented artists - I just love that one cover.

Greatest

It's called "Greatest Hits" for a reason. Walk Like an Egyptian is one of the best, along with Manic Monday and Hazy Shade of Winter. I strongly suggest you get at least one of these three. The Bangles are a really talented group of people, with catchy and well-written songs.

In the process, they became one of the handful of all-female bands of the '80s to win both critical and commercial success. The critical success came first — with their self-titled debut EP and full-length album, All Over the Place — and popular success arrived once they polished their sound, added some synthesizers, and deviated slightly from their...
