Album Review

One of the last of the 1950s Chicago blues performers, Magic Slim lends a strong credibility and power to everything he sings and plays. Anything Can Happen, which was recorded live at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, CA, features Slim in prime form. His lyrics are mostly pretty basic, as exemplified by the songtitles, and he excels on both guitar (including on an occasional instrumental) and in his powerful vocals. His backup quartet is also excellent, providing a floor for Magic Slim's flights. All blues collectors should be familiar with Magic Slim and have at least a few of his recordings in their collection. Anything Can Happen is an excellent place for them to start.

Customer Reviews

Anything Can Happen, a live album by Magic Slim & the Teardrops, is proof that the best musicians sound just as good live (if not better) than their studio sessions. Like Bo Diddley, Talking Heads and Howlin' Wolf, Magic Slim's live work is as exciting as anything you're likely to hear. As to be expected, the audience's presence on every track only reaffirms this. Slim's guitar work is incredible, the Teardrops are at their best ("And you know it") and the sound quality is excellent. If you're a "Bluesman" (or 'Blueswoman') you'll want to add this rockin' album to your collection. (p.s. There are also some great slower blues exercises like "Goin' to Mississippi" and a great rendition of the unclassifiable instrumental "Black Tornado")

Fantastic performer, love the boogie rhythm, sensational beat in his repertoire of songs., I love Goin to Mississippi, I'm a Bluesman, I Need Lovin, wonderful dance music, background party music, I would give anything nearly to jam like he does....I am a white boy and this guy gets me up and movin on the floor, love to play his songs on the way to work, and they really energize me..

Genre: Blues

b. Morris Holt, 7 August 1937, Torrence, Grenada, Mississippi, USA. Blues guitarist and vocalist Magic Slim became interested in music during childhood. He moved first to nearby Grenada, Mississippi, and then to Chicago in 1955, where he worked as bass player for Magic Sam, who gave Holt his name. He obtained a false identity card so that he was able to play bass with Sam in the bars and clubs. After completing that stay, he switched back to guitar and performed with a Chicago band called Mr. Pitiful...
