BBC Radio2 Alt.Country Guru Bob Harris Can't be wrong...

In her second solo recording, Gina Villalobos has sculpted a masterpiece chiseled by tools available to only the most gifted of artists; Poignant lyrics and ethereal instrumentation are delivered with such succinct effect, the connection with the listener is instantaneous. Themes resonating in the hearts and minds of anyone who's ever loved, lost, or merely dreamed of such are adeptly captured in the hour-long musical journey that is Rock N Roll Pony. Each of the 12 songs on this 2004 release carry the listener on a journey through the universality of aliveness, heartache, exhilaration, and loss. Yet despite the sublime melancholic tinges, Villalobos’ infusion of undying optimism delivers this set into that sacred and rare territory of over-and-over-again listenability. Villalobos’ true gift is in showing that through each and every trial and hardship in life, there is always a note of hope to be sung. She rips the guts out of traditional country ballads and infuses her bliss-for-a-night sandpaper heart, beating defiantly from the opening track, to the last longing notes of album’s close. This is a recording unlike anything that has been put out in recent years. If you love Ryan Adams’ whiskey-soaked honesty, Lucinda Williams’ twang, the vocal intensity of Brandi Carlile, the shimmering pop-smarts of Minibar, the on-the-verge fragility of Kathleen Edwards, and the sheer fun of old-school Sheryl Crow, you simply must own this recording, Rock N Roll Pony by Gina Villalobos.

Blessed with a voice that can sound tough and vulnerable at will and a gift for writing songs that mine rough-hewn beauty from life's tragedies, Gina Villalobos became one of the most acclaimed new artists in the alternative country community with her breakthrough album, 2004's Rock 'n' Roll Pony, though it took her a long, hard road to get there. Villalobos was born in Lake Sherwood, CA, not far from Malibu; her father was a cinematographer and her mother was a passionate music fan and amateur vocalists...
