Editors’ Notes

Long before Jenny and Johnny started singing together, each had a separate entertainment career. Former child actor Jenny Lewis was the lead singer of Rilo Kiley, and Johnathan Rice, also an indie rock solo artist, played Roy Orbison in Walk the Line. Their debut album, I’m Having Fun Now, is essentially a seamless mesh of girl/boy voices articulating puzzling and profound lyrics over adorable, slightly surf-rock melodies. Though their wordplay is dark and often graphic, the instrumental tracks are surprisingly sanguine. “Switchblade” is a bewitching ode to a reckless, freewheeling youth, while “Big Wave” opines about a bankrupt California populated with low-libido-having, pill-popping denizens. Jenny cries, “We’re spending what we haven’t made.”

Jenny = King Midas

Everything Jenny touches turns to gold, and this is no exception. Worth every penny of the LP, I have not been able to stop playing it all day since the release. 'Scissor Runner' is my fav pop/rock/alt song of 2010! There are all kinds of f-u references to the recording industry here, most notably in 'Pet Snakes.' The bonus song on the pre-order is killer, too. Excellent addition for any Jenny Lewis fan.

Is she ever wrong?

I've been streaming this for a few days and now I've got the real thing. Jenny's instincts are never wrong, her vocals never waver and her songs will always pierce your heart. Johnathan, aside from his excellent taste in women, has some damn fine songs in his bag of tricks, too. This is at the top of my 2010 list so far.

And I dare you NOT to bounce along and smile to "Big Wave."

Deceivingly Simple

what seems like simple surfer rock and melodic hooks grows deeper on further listens. like much of jenny lewis's work, this one worms its way into your psyche with repeat listens, to the point where you are humming melodies to songs you can't even sing lyrics to. this one is a sleeper, the more time I spend with it the more time I want to let it stream on and on. good work jenny and johnny!

Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice began working together in 2005, when Rice made a guest appearance on Lewis’ first solo album, Rabbit Fur Coat. Lewis returned the favor by singing on Rice’s own solo debut, Trouble Is Real, and the two continued their partnership after Rice joined Lewis’ touring band the following year. Following the Rabbit Fur Coat tour, Lewis and Rice began living together in Silverlake and working on new projects, including Rice’s sophomore effort Further North, Lewis’ Acid Tongue,...
