great album

This album has a lot of soul. A blend of jazz and bluegrass, with good rhyhm.

One thing that's been on my mind

I like the song The Flood, it's got a nice easy going way about it. However, Ifeel that her lyrics are misguided, and therefore the entire message of the song is wrong. I'd like to point out the Ms. Jewell that when you build a city by the sea, in hurricane alley, and that city lies below sea level, it is inevitable that it will flood. You cannot tame Mother Nature is this case. That is an absolute certainty (and it will happen again). It has nothing to do with race or class.

Born: Boise, ID

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Although her country-flavored and blues-infused version of contemporary folk (which also can include healthy doses of rockabilly and surf) has drawn comparisons to musicians like Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, Jolie Holland, and the Be Good Tanyas, Eilen Jewell's strongest influences have been the classic sides recorded by Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday (the latter artist is no doubt the source for Jewell's characteristic and surprisingly effective stretched, slowed, and even slurred vocal mannerisms)....
