Striking It Rich features 14 more sides of hipster acoustic swing from Hicks and his helpmates, including the fan favorites "I Scare Myself" and "Canned Music." The band's musicianship remains mostly on the mark, but there are elements of the album that go beyond kitsch and the humor here is considerably darker than in the past — perhaps early signs of fading inspiration? The jazz flourishes of "Flight of the Fly" are nice, but not enough to lift this album's darker spirits. "Moody Richard (The Innocent Bystander)" may be among the most well-known numbers on this album, but with its string arrangements and uncharacteristically slick production, it suggests the band wasn't always above playing the commercial game. Maybe the album's title was meant as more than just wishful thinking.
Strike it Rich with this album
Originally released in 1972, this music, while drawing from the influences of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, was way ahead of its time, spawning many imitators. Any of Dan Hick's music from this era is worth having in your collection. He is still recording, and his recent releases are just as poignant as those of 30 ears ago.
Striking It Rich
This album (I had it on vinyl when it was first released) is one of my favorites. I'm so glad iTunes released it because my record was destroyed in a fire.Though I could do without a couple of cuts ("Skippy's Farewell" is really grating, and I don't like "The Laughing Song" all that much), the rest is easy, clever fun to listen to. Check out "I Scare Myself" and "Walkin' One and Only". And the Licks' loosey-goosey version of "I'm an Old Cowhand" will bring a smile to your face.
Richer because I heard it.
Dan Hicks is a wonder. This album is worth twice the price. I bet most people in America have heard a tune of his and wondered who did that. I hear some of his music on NPR at least once a week as tantalizing music between segments. No one can listen without smiling and tapping their toes. After over thirty years he still is writing incredibily original tunes and pleasing everyone that hears them.
