Reseña de álbum

The Millennium Collection: The Best of Curtis Mayfield & the Impressions collects some of the best songs Mayfield recorded with the Impressions and on his own, including "Gypsy Woman," "People Get Ready," "Freddie's Dead," "Superfly," "Woman's Got Soul," and "Choice of Colors." Though a thorough look at Mayfield's talents and innovations is beyond the scope of this album, The Millennium Collection does provide enough of his definitive tracks to make it a worthwhile overview of his work.

more to this song. . . . .

Yes, I do agree with a couple of the reviewers. This tune, "We're A Winner", is a Mayfield original out of the late 60's. I listened to it a lot as a kid living in New Orleans, a lot of music there as well as a lot of spirituality. I reminisce about all of my relatives, many of whom have passed away, when I hear this tune. It carried a healthy dose of innocence with those sweet keyboard and guitar phrases backing Curtis' smooth but spirited tenor vocals. It was a very soulful, funk-laden party tune. But there was more to this song. I mentioned about spirituality being an influence on a large number of people in New Orleans, certainly the poorer people who would otherwise have no hope. Well, it was a great influence on Curtis Mayfield as well. Quite a few of his tunes overtly reflected that, no question about it. But the references in "We're A Winner" whether direct or indirect were taken right out of the bible's book of 1Thessalonians 4th chapter 15th thru the 18th verses. This song's theme is one of eternal hope. And he was delivering a type of "sermon", if you will. Listen to it again and then read those verses to see the parallel. His message was spiritual while John Mayer's message is political. Vast difference for Jay H to consider. I don't say it out of harshness, just saying so matter of factly.

You ignorant @ hole.

Dearest Jay, Curtis Mayfield was an artist in the 60s, and "Waiting on the World to Change" is a new song. Curtis is a legend, did you not get that he was an old artist, from the whole album cover/ fact that he's, you know, Curtis Mayfield? You clearly don't know anything about anything, and you should just give up on life. But AMAZING album. Best ones are "We're a Winner" and "People Get Ready"

Classics with class

First, I think our boy Jay was being sarcastic about the John Mayer thing. I can only hope, at least. And, I'd really say that the John Mayer song mercilessly rips "People Get Ready" as much or more than it does "We're A Winner." But enough about that chump Mayer. Curtis Mayfield was a genius and I don't throw that term around lightly. The body of work is there -- prescient and timeless, yet totally of its moment. Soulful without cliché, Mayfield's work exudes honesty and originality. Personally, I prefer the first few solo albums for a career peak, but his work with The Impressions represents a hugely influential and crucial era for him. Music would never be the same. I remain thankful for everything that Mayfield brought to music as well as to American culture.
