Album Review

Geoff Tate the man is most certainly best known as the lead singer of Queensrÿche. Geoff Tate the album is most certainly not going to be confused for a Queensrÿche album. Instead of representing the cutting-edge form of metal for which Queensrÿche is famous, Tate has given listeners an album that is very non-metal. Its style, like Rÿche's, is often undefinable and, much like the band's work, covers a wide range of musical approaches. However, the closest you can come to a description of this album is probably a modern pop-oriented rock sound. It is, as one would expect, thoughtful in texture. The styles that show up on the album vary from almost dance-oriented pop to Spanish guitar-inflected to fairly straight-ahead rock and even electronic neo-symphonic-leaning sounds. All is delivered in a very professional fashion. The disc does, however, have its shortcomings. For one thing, it tends to drag a bit. The other detriment that pops out is that much of the percussion comes across as artificial sounding and is too far up in the mix. It seems a given that the vocal performances would be top-notch, considering Tate's reputation as one of the finest voices in rock. That assumption holds true. The overall vision of this disc is that it will definitely please the hardcore fans of the singer. Those who are more general fans of Queensrÿche may be put off a bit, though. However, the disc is really quite solid and, given the chance, should be enjoyable.

LIke Queesnryche..

...Geoff is not afraid to take risks. This recording need to be listened too with an open mind. At first I did not like this because I was expecting Queensryche. Then after listening to is and more so listening to the words, I thought and still think this is a great album for any Tate fan. The music is more from the heart and one can tell from the first song all the way down the list. The best part about the Queensryche is they take risks for the music and not the commercial success!

Disappointing Outing.

This solo release from Queensryche frontman Geoff Tate is not worth the money. He strays far from the Queensryche sound that many would expect to hear from him. At times, it seems as if he is trying to make a pop/electronic album, but it becomes obvious that it is not a genre of music that he is tailored to sing. That being said, there is one standout track to me. "Over Me" is a solid effort that I found to be enjoyable, but maybe only because it was at then end of this less-than-mediocre album. It sounds that much better after listening to the same sound for the ten straight tracks previous to it.

Familiar Voice in a New Context

Geoff Tate's voice is still as clear and resounding today as it was in the early 80's. While this is far from his familiar Queensryche sounds, I enjoy this album, particularly "Passenger," "This Moment" and "Over Me." The album gets played quite a bit in my extensive collection.

I recommend this album, or the three songs listed above, to anyone who appreciates Geoff Tate's amazing voice and is willing to hear him in a new context.

Taking the operatic vocal stylings of Judas Priest's Rob Halford and Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson to whole new levels, Queensrÿche's Geoff Tate remains one of heavy metal's most talented and technically accomplished singers. Born on January 14, 1959 in Stuttgart, West Germany, Tate and his family relocated to Tacoma, Washington soon after. Tate became interested in music at an early age, especially symphonic works (additionally, his family always sang around the house, while his aunt was a talented...
