iTunes Editors’ Notes

Yellowbirds is basically Brooklynite Sam Cohen of Apollo Sunshine going it alone. Though retro, stylistic flourishes like funk grooves and howling harmonicas have gone missing, Cohen does imbue Yellowbirds with a surprising and subtle vintage element: the breezy “Rings In The Trees” has an Everly Brothers vibe to it, an evocative, easy melody delivered on rich, double tracked vocals; “Beneath the Reach of Light” packs a wallop, its wall-of-sound approach infusing sparkling guitars, autoharp and Cohen’s big vocals with the kind of grandiosity Roy Orbison was known for. In fact, through much of The Color, one might surmise Cohen is an Orbison fan;  if he isn’t, Cohen’s dramatic, reverb-wrapped voice, the occasional ‘50s guitar sound and sweeping nature of these tunes are simply wonderful reminders of that great musician’s influence on rock music. Tracks like “The Rest of My Life” and “Our Good Days Are Gone” are built on full-bodied organ riffs and broad strokes of American-rooted guitar, both of which prove to stand the test of time (and then some) on The Color.

Cohen chose the moniker Yellowbirds for the project, enlisting some friends to help him flesh out the songs, and eventually released a few singles and in early 2011 a debut album, The Color. To tour in support of the album, Cohen...
