Whether it's choirs that don't know how to blend, an orchestra that doesn't know how to stay together, or any combination of choirs and instrumentalists that don't know how to play in tune, this gorgeous piece in its full orchestral version does not yet appear to have received the treatment it deserves. Sadly, this recording is no exception. Chung did much better with Messaien's Turangalila Symphony, a recording that the composer himself lauded. But Bartoli's style of singing does not lend itself to the gentler solo passage in this piece, and the rest is simply lacking.
The musicality is great but the volume level is extremely low (even though this is a "requiem"). I have to double the normal volume level on my sound system to even heard most of the music. But the singing, once I hear it, is magnificent.
