In her lifetime Eartha Kitt was one hell of a vivacious performer, as this live 1965 recording from The Plaza hotel in New York City attests. Accompanied by a small but tight jazz ensemble, Ms. Kitt foregoes her usual seductive stage banter for a more humorous set peppered with witty and poetic intros — but she still manages to let loose with some of that sultry vavoom that kept the cocktail generation on its toes. The sound quality is pristine. Everything is so crystal clear that by the opening notes of the playful "Sell Me!" you may feel transported back in time and craving near-extinct elixirs like Side Cars and Sapphire Martinis. "I Wanna Be Evil!" and spoken bits like "The Touch" ooze the same kind of sinister attraction that she gave to the character of Catwoman on the third season of the Batman television series. Her Japanese phrasing in "C'mon a My House" is beyond impressive, but it's her signature tune "C'est Si Bon!" (replete with that iconic feline throat purring) that shines brightest here. Her hilariously oddball version of "Rumania, Rumania" is an outstanding way to end a bubbly and spirited performance. Eartha Kitt was much more than a lounge act. She was a natural born star.

The BEST of Eartha Kitt

This album perfectly captures why Eartha Kitt is a big star and her charm and wit. If you're a drag queen, you can't be without "I Wanna Be Evil" or "Champagne Taste." A must for any Eartha Kitt fan!

An Amazing Woman!

The world has lost one of the great female singers of our time this Holiday Season. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform in California several years ago at Kimball's East in Emeryville. It was a small dinner club which made her bigger than life itself and you felt like she was there just for you. You could tell she loved to perform and her fans were what made it so exciting for her. I am sad that I won't be able to see her in 2009 but will always have my memories of when I did. Truly An Amazing Woman! I will miss you Eartha.

Eartha Kitt epitomized the idea of the sex-kitten chanteuse, rising to fame with a nightclub act centered on her slinky stage presence and her throaty purr of a voice. As much as she enjoyed vamping it up, she also projected the image of an exotic international sophisticate, especially since she sang in several different languages. She brought a definite zest to her torch songs, and favored lyrics that painted her as the Material Girl of her time. Kitt's persona was so vivid and well-developed that...
