Album Review

A brain fryer from the moment "Ring My Bell" pummels you with its assaultive chords and Ebbot Lundberg's Iggy rant. Riff-driven, yet unafraid to explore sonic textures not frequently part of the hard rock lexicon (i.e., the noisy fake jazz of "Pour un Flirt Avec Toi," the aural bombast and metallic skronk of "Down on the Beach"), Union Carbide Productions were on top of their game with their debut, a record that deserved more notice than it got. They would come close, but never climb these heights again, a fact that makes this, for Stooges/MC5 lovers, an essential purchase.

crazy good lp out of left field

When this came out in the late 80's I was growing increasingly disappointed w/ many of the new releases of the day. All I was listening to was the Stooges and MC5, okay, maybe some early Mudhoney but this album just ruled my turntable (yes turntable). Get past the lame name of the band and their uninspired later work (if you've heard them at all). Why are so many first albums the best work an artist makes? Just download this with no expectations and enjoy it first song to last. I saw them at Green Street Station in Jamaica Plain (fake ID always worked there) with a small crowd of those in the know and was blown away. Who knew the Swedes could rock so hard? And that they had such good musical tastes?

In fact, I can think of few bands who employed the Stooges primal riff-thud'n'noise better than UCP. Fueled by the rampaging guitars of Patrick Caganis and Bjorn Olsson, and the half-octave, node-encrusted vocal growl (and did this son of a bitch growl!) of Ebbot Lundberg, UCP roared out of the blocks with an awesome debut record entitled In the Air Tonight which,...
