Album Review

Shortly before the release of this album, the Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad released one entitled Country. That album was almost entirely acoustic, and featured instrumentation that looked more like a bluegrass band than one that would have the word "dub" in its name. For those who might have found that album puzzling, In These Times will ease the confusion. This one is about as straight-up as roots reggae gets: one-drop and rockers rhythms, socially conscious lyrics, and dubwise production flourishes are all in evidence here, and if the politics get a bit ham-handed sometimes (sample couplet: "Get rich, get wealthy/Are we doing the best that we can to make sure that our families stay healthy?"), the grooves are relentless and powerful. Several tracks are reprised from Country, including "Healing" (the most reggae-inflected song on that previous album) and a lovely new version of "Love You More." Highlights include the excellent one-drop anthem "All Night Music" and a fine sufferer's number titled "Pockets," and the slow, thick rockers groove of "World War" is also excellent. While they're recycling material, it would be great to see a full-length dubwise companion to this album.

Customer Reviews

This time, GPGDS hit it!

The multi dimensional sound of this band is second to none!!!True students of classic reggae that transcends to this time period lyrically, while also fusing exceptional instrument play and electronic riffs throughout jam-outs such as no world war, love you more, foundation and next best explosion to name a few. Every song is worth hearing and if you've seen this band live, this is their best transition to digital yet! although they left out some of their classic songs, GPGDS is evolving into a band that demands respect with this very legit album! The best way I can describe them is sublime meets rebelution, with the folk mix of Garcia and Dylan.

So Fresh!!!

Giant Panda raises the bar once again! All of their music is dope, cant really pick a favorite, but this quickly entered into heavy rotation and will stay there for a long time... Bless up Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad!!! Massive work!

I Tried to warn ya!!!!

Once you listen to these guys you will never stop, great album!!!

In some ways, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad are the live dub version of the Grateful Dead, mixing traditional American folk and country with Jamaican reggae and dub rhythms, with plenty of improvisational jams and interludes, all while looking and sometimes sounding like a bluegrass band. Toss in just a little of the Clash, and it's a balancing act that made this uplifting and energetic group a huge draw on the jam band circuit. Formed in 2001 in Rochester, New York, Giant Panda grew out of a fertile...
