Editors’ Notes

The 20th-aniversary super-deluxe edition of Nirvana’s third and final studio album, In Utero, features the original mix along with Steve Albini’s never-released mixes for the singles “Heart Shaped Box” and “All Apologies” placed alongside the Scott Litt remixes that appeared on the album. Plus there's a 2013 mix of the album that further intensifies the sound. The Albini mix was raw and deliberately unpolished, while the new mixes bring out tonal colors no one’s heard before. All of these versions should make it fun for obsessive fans to hear the differences and should quell purists' dissent. Then there are the rare b-sides, demos (including instrumental takes for karaoke fans and Dave Grohl’s 1990 solo demo of his earliest composition “Marigold”), the recently unearthed instrumental “Forgotten Tune,” and the full-length Live & Loud show from Seattle’s Pier 48 on Dec. 13, 1993, which features the final Nirvana lineup with second guitarist Pat Smear. Incredible and intense.

"Super Deluxe?"

I know most of you are too young to get that this idea is the antithesis of what Cobain would have wanted.

It can only be some ultimate irony that the album created to frustrate the industry and turn away the cool kids that liked his pretty songs is now a $35 digital pile of corporate garbage.

Not what he would of wanted.

This album isn't deluxe. It's everything that cobain hated about the industry. $35 come on. Don't waste your money just buy the regular album. This is a unnecessary money grab posed as a tribute.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Prior to Nirvana, alternative music was consigned to specialty sections of record stores, and major labels considered it to be, at the very most, a tax write-off. After the band's second album, 1991's Nevermind, nothing was ever quite the same, for better and for worse. Nirvana popularized punk, post-punk, and indie rock, unintentionally bringing them into the American mainstream like no other band to date. While their sound was equal parts Black Sabbath (as learned by fellow Washington underground...
