True 60's folkie for the 21st Century

I downloaded this two days ago and haven't stopped listening to it since. I'm not the biggest folk fan; I found out about Pete browsing around on Myspace for garage-rocker Billy Childish stuff. "Love Lies Bleeding" came up on one of the pages and I was immediately hooked. Billy discovered him on the streets of his hometown and recorded this album live in his kitchen on an old half-track tape machine. This lends it an immediacy as well as a vintage sound. Mostly originals, except for a Dylan cover and a cover of The Mekons' "Alone and Forsaken" (hauntingly sung by Billy's wife Julie). The only misstep I discern is some simplistic "moon in june" type rhyming on one or two tracks, but this is a very minor quibble for what is an outstanding debut. My favorite tracks are the aforementioned ones, as well as "We Belong Together", the title track (both duets with Julie) and...shoot, they're all good. Buy this today!
