An Amazing Start

With their debut EP Against the Current comes out strong, heartfelt, and fresh. Immediately fans are treated to the namesake of the EP, "Infinity." The lead singer, Chrissy Costanza, takes listeners through quite the range of vocal melodies as she weaves a story of young love, and soul searching. Continuing on, fans will be pleasantly surprised by the next two, previously unreleased, tracks. "Something You Need" sticks to the tried and true method that Against the Current has become so popular for, and who can blame them. This fast paced song takes listeners on a journey through the middle of summertime and the relationship of two young lovers. "Comeback Kid" deviates from this method though, and it hits hard. This song is an experiment for the young band, and I would have to call it a success. With soulful lyrics and a wonderful medley of instruments accompanying, this is a song that should be played on every radio, because it is a banner for anyone who has ever felt like they are drowning in a relationship, of any kind. "Another You (Another Way)" is also a well crafted piece of music, with a heartfelt plea that only those that have suffered a broken heart will truly understand. The final song, or remix rather, is "Closer, Faster." Fans of the band will instantly recognize this tune, and the small changes that have been made to it. A solid song to anchor the EP, but I must question why they chose to put out yet another rendition, as it had been previously remixed to accompany their first sponsored music video.
An amazing debut EP that leaves you wanting more, Against the Current is sure to succeed in not only swimming against the tide, but changing it entirely. I for one will anxiously await an LP, because anyone who listens is sure to figure out that this young band has what it takes to go all the way!

About Against The Current

Against the Current are a pop-punk band that formed in Poughkeepsie, New York in 2011. Led by singer Chrissy Costanza, guitarist/singer Dan Gow, and drummer Will Ferri, they initially built up a large following on YouTube covering songs like Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Good Time" and Kelly Clarkson's "Catch My Breath." Their own debut single, "Thinking," arrived in July 2012, followed a year later by "Closer, Faster," the latter of which also appeared on their debut EP Infinity in 2014. Powered by catchy, upbeat melodies and Costanza's strong voice, Against the Current's sound fell more on the pop side of the spectrum. After an all-acoustic EP, they delivered their third EP, Gravity, in 2015 and caught the attention of respected indie Fueled by Ramen Records. With a new label deal in place, they began issuing singles in early 2016 in anticipation of their full-length debut, In Our Bones, which arrived in May of that year. ~ Timothy Monger
