iTunes Review

San Diego's Pinback makes modestly propulsive, thoughtful, guitar-oriented rock that won't raise the hairs on your arms as much as it might get you thinking about that novel you told someone you'd write someday. Spare and clean percussion, bass lines as stealthy and warm as old sneakers, and uncluttered yet filigreed guitar notes impart a somewhat intellectual vibe. Making music together since 1998, multi-instrumentalists Zach Smith and Rob Crow have created their own musical language. It feels as fluent and natural as a babbling creek or a cooing baby. Strings dance lightly with fingerpicked guitars, snares interlock and skip with electronic beats, and Crow's vocals are the rudder, a mellow and steady guide leading the way. His delivery and the winsome, reticent vibe of "Sherman" have an emotional pull not unlike Death Cab for Cutie. More charged tunes, like "Proceed to Memory" and "Denslow, You Idiot!" swing and swagger like a well-behaved drunken sailor bent on finding one more beer before last call: a detour seems likely, but somehow the course is stayed.

Thank you, Jesus (Again)

I sent the review that you see below this one a long time ago (2+ years now). I wanted to send another one in because I'm not sure that we may get another album after this one. Just don't know.

I'm a big music person, I have been around a long time. I partake of many genres, flavors, and sometimes one-off gimmick songs and enjoy it all. But, I need intelligent music, that is also beautiful and well constructed. Music that takes to me to other people's minds who see more than I. That is the perfect description of Pinback.

The Beatles, Prince, Ben Folds, these are the kind of people who have done this. Pinback is all of their equals or more. By the way, Summer in Abaddon is probably one of the top 10 albums of all time. Seriously.

I write this to potentially mark their greatness for posterity. I am, more hopefully, looking to seed my hope that they could find it within them ( and their motivation) to do another album. I just have no idea where these two maestro's heads are these days (and, we are getting older...)

Try out Pinback, you will be blown away. Their music is not for fish-heads, so if you are a big bawler, then please for God's sake move along. But, if you have a soul, and you need stimulation and beauty you can't go wrong.

Thanks, guys. I don't know where I would have been without you.

My name is Chris, and I approve this message.

I have been waiting for this album for a long, long time. I knew Sherman was fantastic, but one never knows the quality one will receive once you actually get a new album.

It is fantastic. It was like main-lined Pinback from start to finish. Every single song is epic and perfect. Pinback is my favorite band of all time. I just can't believe how good this album is.

What's up with the $7.99 price? I would have paid twice that.

Worth the wait!

So good

Great band! Can't wait for the new album!!!

Great band! Can't wait for the new album!!!
The first 3 songs are great! And knowing Pinback, the rest will be great to!!

Biography

Formed: 1998 in San Diego, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

While a rotating cast of instrumentalists finds loose assembly under the Pinback name, the partnership of Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow is at the heart of the some of the most complex, postmodern indie pop happening on the West Coast. In the first few days of 1998, Smith (of San Diego-based Three Mile Pilot) and Crow (of Thingy and Heavy Vegetable) formed a part-time recording project under the name Pinback. The simple plan grew more involved while Three Mile Pilot took an indefinite hiatus...
