iTunes Review

Bittersweet in tone yet ultimately triumphant, Inland exceeds Jars of Clay’s typically high standards for album-making. The veteran Christian pop/rock quartet benefits from production input by Tucker Martine, who underscores the band’s sonic connection with the likes of R.E.M., My Morning Jacket, and The Decemberists (all previous Martine clients). JoC rises to the occasion with outstanding songs dealing with everyday angst, thwarted desire, and spiritual longing in eloquent, visceral terms. Chiming guitar lines and a punchy rhythm section drive home the ache and longing within “After the Fight,” “Age of Immature Mistakes,” and “Skin & Bones.” Tracks like “Loneliness & Alcohol” and “Left Undone” examine human weakness with an unsparing honesty tempered by tenderness. Singer Dan Haseltine’s delicate yet trenchant vocals bring out the brooding colors within “Pennsylvania,” “Fall Asleep,” and similarly introspective tracks. Hope breaks through amid the pervasive darkness, especially in the prayerful “Reckless Forgiver” and the idealistic title tune.

Inland review by Jen B

I was lucky enough to score an early copy of Inland at the Jars show in Knoxville TN on Aug 17th, and I haven't stopped playing it since! Let me rephrase that: I CAN'T STOP playing it! These guys have been playing together for 20 years now and it's kind of amazing how much they've grown and matured as a band, musicians and writers over the years. Every CD they put out sounds completely different from the last one, yet all their songs weave together in a tapestry of art and compassion, personality, humility and grace that only Jars can deliver! From the moment "Flood" crashed through the barrier between Christian and mainstream radio back in the 90s, it seems like they've spent their career fighting and rebelling against the rules and stereotypes of the so-called "Christian rock" genre, but they've never really been a "Christian rock" band. They're Christians who happen to be in a rock band ... and there's a big difference! Inland marks their escape from all those stereotypes and rules, to the world of just plain great music! It's a masterpiece collection of 12 songs completely unlike anything they've ever released! From beginning to end it haunts and breathes and stirs and addicts, each song telling part of a living story that melts together into a profound picture of love and humanity, tempered with that trademark brutal honesty Jars fans have come to expect! Standouts are the title track "Inland", full of wisdom and longing reminiscent of a father waiting for his prodigal son to come home; the rocking "Loneliness & Alcohol" that will get inside your head and scream your name louder than any brown-bagged bottle; the catchy "Reckless Forgiver" you can't help but tap your leg and sing along to; and the bittersweet whimsy of "Fall Asleep" that makes you feel like you're wandering through the soul of a classic children's book! These guys are awesome (not only talented, but quite possibly the nicest guys in music; there is no pretense with them)! This CD is awesome! Go get your copy, and go see them live when they come around on tour! You won't be disappointed!!!

YOU NEED TO ADD THIS ALBUM TO YOUR LIBRARY. It is superb, awesome, sticks in your head, stays on repeat 24/7.

I've been waiting….

After hearing a number of these songs live and online, i'm really excited about this new album from Jars…There are few bands where I buy the entire album without hesitation. This is one of those bands…they have a great sound with insightful lyrics that just make life better…I hope this jump starts the second half of their career.

Jars of Clay were the breakout band of the so-called alternative CCM movement of the '90s, scoring an enormous mainstream hit with the debut single "Flood" and enjoying platinum sales. The group's lyrics may have been exclusively Christian, but their acoustic-oriented music fit perfectly into the folky jangle pop wing of alternative rock radio, at the time a rarity on the contemporary Christian music scene. Such success set the stage for breakthroughs by Christian bands like dc Talk and Sixpence...
