iTunes Review

The sound of the Soft Boys is the sound of ‘80s college rock before its time. With Robyn Hitchcock leading the way and Kimberly Rew (later of Katrina & The Waves) in full support, the Soft Boys recorded one of the finest albums of the new-wave era with their classic album, 1980’s Underwater Moonlight. “I Wanna Destroy You” is a killer anti-war lead-off cut, with a jangle that would soon be co-opted with great effect by R.E.M. This 30th Anniversary Edition adds 30 bonus cuts, including Soft Boy rehearsal tapes that are raw and gritty and filled with fun and purpose. There are other wonderful outtakes such as “Strange” and “Only the Stones Remain.” The basic album is a wonder itself. “I Got The Hots” is a hilarious blues come-on. “Insanely Jealous of You” shows real character as Hitchcock sounds like a rambling psychotic wandering the neighborhood after dark. “Old Pervert” is one tough butcher job as the rhythms turn violent and the guitars get tangled up in chaos.

"...And you won't have a single atom to call your own."

Finally! Re-issued in all it's glory. It's an absolute no-brainer of a purchase. Go ahead and buy it from your local record store if you can. Or, if they've closed it down or you happen to be stranded in the middle of nowhere, I suppose you could get it here. Can of Bees is also excellent. (Perhaps even better?) Robyn Hitchcock is criminally underrated here in the States. Solo work is great. But early Soft Boys LPs are what mainly impacted a lot of great bands. (REM, Flaming Lips, Camper Van Beethoven, Yo La Tengo, to name just a few.) Funny, energetic, surreal, psychedelic... AWESOME.

What a bargin!

"Underwater Moonlight" is by far my favorite Soft Boys record. And with 30 extra/bonus tracks for only $9.99 this may be the best deal in the iTunes Store!! Get it NOW. I've got the original LP and CD releases, but I'm picking this up too.

Total bargain, amazing. Classic album, and with the equivalent of 2 extra albums of bonus cuts.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '00s

The Soft Boys have turned out to be one of the most influential bands in shaping contemporary alternative music, though few are completely familiar with the quirky band's legacy. Formed in Cambridge, England in 1976 on the heels of the punk revolution, the Soft Boys eschewed the three-chord nihilism of punk and opted for a crude version of psychedelic/folk-rock that was well on its way out of fashion, but oddly, just on the cusp of a resurgence. Robyn Hitchcock recruited Cambridge musicians Morris...
