iTunes Review

One of Wu-Tang Clan's greatest emcees, Inspectah Deck is universally beloved by fans, but he's always had bad luck with his solo albums. 7L & Esoteric helped put Boston on the indie-rap map back in the '90s, and they've been steadily releasing quality (if under-the-radar) material ever since. They hooked up in 1999 for the exceptional Speaking Real Words EP and reunite here for a 14-track concept album tied together by old-school comic record samples (think MF DOOM's Operation: Doomsday and Ghostface's Iron Man). As usual, the Rebel INS more than delivers on the mic: he rocks wordy, witty verses that perfectly complement Eso's. 7L consistently impresses with outstanding production that overflows with head-banging drums, freaky samples, and new takes on several classic golden-era loops. Guests include Ghostface, Roc Marciano, Oh No, Action Bronson, Cappadonna, Mr. MFN Exquire, and Vinnie Paz. "Savagely Attack," "It's Raw," and "Poisonous Thoughts" are standouts.

It's hard to believe that my expectations for this record actually exceeded my anticipation, but it did, and after first listen I am ready to award this record as my early favorite for record of the year. DJ 7L's production is his best and Esoteric is rapping with a heightened vigor. I was at the Speaking Real Words EP release party in Cambridge many years ago, and it's evident that the rapport built between INS and Eso has matured over the years. The chemistry is there. Fantastic album, worth the purchase, and overall a job well done.

Simply Amazing.

Listened to this album at a minimum 7 times through and through already, its that good. I Think this one is going to be a single playlist on my ipod, on repeat for a long time. Whoever doesn't buy this album has no clue what they're missing. So well thought out, and flows all the way through, not once have I had to touch the seek button to change the song to the next, even in shuffle mode. BUY IT

Who Says Veteran Rappers Don't Still Have It?

This is a crazy dope album. There's a sweet irony: many would consider Inspectah Deck's debut solo album Uncontrolled Substances to not be amongst the best of the Wu Tang Clan's first wave of solo albums (compare to Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx, Liquid Swords, Iron Man, RZA as Bobby Digital, etc). However, I think CZARFACE is the best of the new Wu and Wu affiliates' albums. This album is much better than Wu Block. This album is fire. Buy it. Just when you thought the world was ending because Drake won the Grammy for best album of the year, the Rebel INS, 7L & Esoteric replied with a dope LP full of bangers that feels fresh and different while having an old school feel.

Czarface is a collaboration between Boston-based underground hip-hop duo 7L & Esoteric and Wu-Tang Clan MC Inspectah Deck. The trio's collaboration stretches back to 1999, when Inspectah Deck guested on 7L & Esoteric's "Speaking Real Words" single. Deck later appeared on "12th Chamber," a track on 7L & Esoteric's 2010 album 1212. After brainstorming a full-length for several years, Czarface's self-titled debut emerged on Brick Records in 2013. The album was loosely based around the character of Czarface,...
