I like it!

It's as if a Weezer intro ran into an old chorus from a Bread song, and as they were reminiscing on the sidewalk, some chords from a Boston song serendipitously rounded the corner and they all decided to go get a beer together, the aftermath of which is this very song.

A modern song with the soul of vintage pop at its best

Thank you, iTunes, for introducing me to another musician I would not have otherwise heard through the usual corporate music marketing venues that is over-saturated with recycled, formulaic and unfortunate modern pop music that permeates our radios these days. As I write this, Katy Perry has been ranked number one right now on iTunes. Big surprise there. Congrats to the success of the corporate music labels for their ability to regurgitate generic pop.

Now, if you belong to that market, I doubt you will have any appreciation for this sort of intelligent pop. Don't even bother.

I am always on the hunt for independent music and musicians, because I'm tired of what everyone's trying to force down my throat. And I'm guilty of being unable to resist a free download! When I gave this a listen, I was impressed with the dimension and depth of the composition, the layered harmonies by an obviously talented vocalist, and it intrigued me to download the rest of the album.

Let's just say, they did not disappoint. In fact, I was bowled over. It is obviously a well-crafted album, with attention to subtle aural detail that lends beautiful texture to all the songs in the subdued sound of this record. And, although they have a cohesive sound, each song has a distinctive personality that is vastly different from the last. I recommend giving 'Bettie Page', 'Whistle and Wait', and 'Agoraphobia' a listen to get a sense of their range.

And it's an album that definitely brings to mind some sort of happy marriage of the power-pop sounds of days of yore, like Harry Nilsson ( apparently a new movie about him is out, and who has had far more influence on today's music than most realize), Roy Orbison, Jeff Buckley, and a mellower cousin of modern artists like Thom Yorke, Grizzly Bear and Andrew Bird.

The more I listen to this, the more I love it. What can I say, it's addictive. I will definitely be adding this record to my frequently played-list and keeping my ears peeled for what they come out with next.

Not bad!

This week's selections were quite pleasantly suprising. I found "Intermission" by Senator and the New Republic to be vaguely familiar, possibly a cross between PFR from the 90s and Paul McCartney. Definitely worth another listen. Hope you enjoy it as well.
