I've always thought if you're going to cover songs by legends you better do them justice or don't bother. They shouldn't have bothered. First the good. Chaka Khan did an admirable job on "Shining Star." Musiq did justice to "Reasons" and whoever thought to pair Kirk Franklin with "September" was brilliant. Other notable interpretations are Mint Condition's version of "After the Love is Gone" and Ledisi's contemporary take on "Devotion." Bilal & The Randy Watson Experience also gave a worthy performance with "Can't Hide Love." Now for the bad. No, bad is too kind of a word, it should be more like horrid. Me'Shell Ndegeocello ruined one of my favorite EWF tracks of all time. Her interpretation of "Fantasy" is certainly no fantasy. Whoever fantasized about Me'Shell covering this tune must've been on some rare mind altering drug because this is just horrible; it's an abomination. It's kind of like a bad dream you'd have after eating some strange mushrooms you found in your backyard. Overall, this one is a yawner. A ho-hum interpretation of a limited songlist from arguably the most influential R&B bands of the 20th century.
I haven't downloaded this album, but to me Me'Shell Ndegeocello's version of 'Fantasy' is the only one worth downloading. She actually reimagined the song. The others are just covers with little to add to the original versions. Might as well just download the Earth, Wind & Fire versions for the rest.
No disrespect, but the album was okay until I got to Fantasy. My god! Everyone stuck to the script, but I could get the original for that. What she did was amazing!! Meshell NDege Ocello is that artist. Brian McKnight is a biter (Anytime is a rip of Outside Your Door). The last person that I heard make a song their own was Roy Ayers' reworking of Sam Cooke's "You Send Me." True artists. I had the opportunity to see her do this live and did not realize it was the EWF remake. Amazing. I decided to purchase her song only. She has a song called "Feels Like Home" on the album Kish Kash by Basement Jaxx which is worth a listen. I cant understand why she isnt more widely accepted in the US. The album is a 3 but Fantasy gets the 5 stars.
