For someone of Siouxsie Sioux’s obvious starpower, she’s been surprisingly shy as a solo performer, releasing her debut solo disc over thirty years since her stage debut. Her once groundbreaking sounds as a pioneer of the gothic sound with the Banshees (and her later work with the Creatures) are now the pillars from which entire careers are made. Her singing influence can be heard if never quite imitated, as she’s never stuck to a single mannerism long enough to effectively parody. Mantaray, her 2007 solo debut, produced by Steve Evans and Charlie Jones, doesn’t stray far from her comfort zone, but it does keep her remaining edge sharp. “Into a Swan,” the first single and lead-off cut, charges with an industrial-glam motion that’s much harder and denser than those of her admirers. The album’s closer, “Heaven and Alchemy” serves as the perfect piano-based finale. In between, Siouxsie vamps (“Here Comes That Day,” “Sea of Tranquility”), rocks (“Loveless”) and gets delightfully weird (“Drone Zone”). Hopefully, it won’t be another thirty years before she finishes her next solo project.
