As a member of San Francisco group The M Machine, Eric Luttrell helped sculpt a dramatic fusion of hard-edged electro, blunt-force bass music, and surprisingly sensitive indie pop. But on his debut solo album, Luttrell definitively makes his peace with the smoother side of electronic music, wrapping four-to-the-floor grooves in sumptuous layers of synths and processed voice. Building on his previous EPs for Above & Beyond’s Anjunadeep label, Into Clouds represents an unusually emotive take on deep techno. He’s still thrilled by the interplay of opposites: These long, linear tracks are fueled by the spark generated when a forceful bass tone collides with a soaring topline; his beats are tuned to all-night raving (“Out of Me” even rights a tough, rolling breakbeat), yet his atmospheres feel more like a daydream.
