iTunes Review

The Reykjavík, Iceland, sextet Of Monsters and Men—which is constantly compared with Arcade Fire and Mumford and Sons—is five young men and a female singer who all specialize in hip and upbeat indie folk pop. This 2011 debut EP kicks off with the festive and fetching “Little Talks,” where big horn blasts bolster vocals by a man (Ragnar Þórhallsson) and woman (Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdótti) over buoyant rhythms and Velcro-catchy melodies. “Six Weeks” follows, with inspired gang vocals soaring over stompy rhythms before Þórhallsson takes over the vocals while the bass and drums pedal alongside sublime guitar parts. The standout ballad “Love Love Love” finds Hilmarsdótti infusing a palpable pain in her textured inflections.
