iTunes Review

For decades New Zealand’s Neil Finn has been one of pop music’s superior craftsmen. From Split Enz to Crowded House to his solo work, his penchant for the hook has always been matched by his clear, earnest vocals that compliment lyrics that are never afraid to add weight when necessary. His solo career was satisfying, but there’s nothing quite like the idea of a band coming together to find their common ground and offer their own special touches. Songs such as “Saturday Sun,” “Either Side of the World” and “Twice If You’re Lucky” are emboldened by harmonies and bright epiphanies where the world continues to shine in the face of all adversity. The slower tunes, “Falling Dove,” “Isolation” and Even If,” in particular, add a luminous austerity that is thrown into relief by the sweet guitar power of “Inside Out.” “Elephants” coasts with a vague psychedelic buzz. The Deluxe Edition ends things with “Turn it Around,” a beautiful finale.

A fantastic collection of songs from Neil Finn. These tunes will wash over you and be stuck in your head. Neil never ceases to amaze and there's always that odd chord change or hook waiting around the corner. No throwaways here.

Upon first listen, this album doesn't seem like much special. But after repeated listens its beauty begins to blossom. Finn and company have come up with another gem. It's more subtle than a lot of previous Crowded House records, but patience is more than rewarded with this worthy addition to the band's catalog. "Twice if You're Lucky" is a stunning Finn ballad that stands up against "Distant Sun" or "Fall At Your Feet." "Amsterdam" is as powerful as "Private Universe" and "Elephants" is as beautiful as "Better Be Home Soon."

This is the sort of album that needs a few listens to really creep into your subconscious, but once it's there you won't be able to get enough. And after all, isn't that the sort of music that stays with you through your life?

Buy it, and listen to it a few times. You'll be intrigued....

This is a genius at work

Just listen to Amsterdam or Isolation. His perspective is changing as his life changes and that's normal but if you've tracked Neil Finn's work you can see that he is a multi-faceted prism through which his observations about life flow. As usual there are some just incredibly breathtaking lyrics. For my money, THIS is where poetry has gone...not into country inflected syllogisms and aphorisms but into delicately linked elements of the lives we all lead. I must have listened to this 40 times now and it keeps gettng better.

Formed: July, 1985 in Melbourne, Australia

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

An institution in their homeland, a two-hit wonder in the U.S., and, during the last half of their ten-year career, bona fide stars in the U.K. and most of Europe, Crowded House recorded some of the best pop music of the late '80s and early '90s. Leader Neil Finn's carefully crafted songs, meticulous eye for lyrical detail, and gift for melody are matched by few other songwriters. Crowded House formed in 1985 when Finn dissolved Split Enz rather than carry on after his brother Tim, the group's founding...
