iTunes Review

The 2012 sophomore album from the Indianapolis prog-core quintet The Contortionist abounds with complexities. Fans of the band (and its fused genres) should immediately hear nods to Rush’s mechanical textures contrasting restrained death metal indicative of Cynic. The huge distorted bass lines in “Feedback Loop” match perfectly with Jonathan Carpenter’s bellowing yells and the big, distorted guitar notes that spiral out with the organically intricate arrangements of a spider web. When the song simmers down, there are trace elements of Dream Theatre’s cinematic approach to building soundscapes. And though Carpenter comes out swinging on the explosive “Causality,” the angular precision of the musicianship holding him down sounds inspired by the busy compositions of Between the Buried and Me. Rather than opt for two singers, Carpenter handles both the Auto-Tuned melodic parts and the brutal screams like a singing Jekyll and howling Hyde. An alternate space-rock take on “Parallel Trance” makes a rewarding bonus track.

Moving Forward!

This album is nothing short of perfection. Every track is perfectly placed and recorded to take you through an amazing journey through intrinsic. I was nervous when I first heard that TC was moving away from Deathcore for a more Prog sound. However the Heavyness from Exoplanet is still threre and the album is more technical than exoplanet. This is a must by for anyone that likes metal at all. One of the best albums in my music library and the best album of 2012. Buy This!

Excellent

One could argue not as heavy (which I do miss the well done heavy side of exoplanet) , but this cd is still every bit of catchy and genius, possibly even more. I just feel like something is missing ...
