Editors’ Notes

It’s remarkable how beautiful Elliott Smith can make sad songs sound. Amidst heart-wrenching lyrics (often about addiction and depression), the mostly sparse arrangements burst with gorgeous melodies that are brushed with his tender, intimate, and almost-whispered vocals. The late-singer/songwriter inspired rapid fans that admired his unwavering DIY aesthetic — even after gaining wider acclaim thanks to an Oscar-nominated song that appeared on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack. This compilation is a wonderful way for newcomers to sample Smith’s songbook – boasting songs from all seven of his studio albums, including breathtaking masterpieces “Angeles” and “Waltz No. 2 (XO).” An Introduction also includes a digital booklet featuring a three-page biography.

Why?

I am a huge fan of smith but an introductory album is just rediculous. If I were to make an introductory album for him, and I wouldn't, I would have selected a very different set of songs. Honestly, if you want to get into this amazing artist you would be much better off getting any of his cd's.

Great Songs, Bad Album

If Elliot Smith was good at anything, it was composing a collection of songs that fit together perfectly. These are all excellent songs, but they do not tell a story when mashed together like From the Basement on a Hill or his self-titled album does. Pick up one of those instead of this.

Serves its purpose

And I would like to encourage anyone who is unfamiliar to pick this up first. You'll have no problem getting into the rest of his work. R.I.P. <3
