unspoken dialog

when you really think about it, throghout jazz there
has always been a collaborative spirit that brings musicians
together in a way you will not find in other genres.
herbie hancock's music was a major influence in my becoming
a jazz listener. before then, most input had come from my
elementary school music teacher playing records for us
from all walks of music, and the juke box in my dad's bar,
with the likes of james brown, ray charles, the four tops,
you name it. the reason i gravitated towards jazz is because
it spoke to me in ways that other music doesn't.
the first herbie hancock album i owned was thrust. i was hooked.
it awoke in me a thirst for more knowledge of this music, more
of this music, and more herbie hancock. i am 3 albums away from having
the complete herbie hancock library to date. v.s.o.p. is one of the best
examples of great musicians each in there own right well known, sharing
a dialog that reqires no words, yet so much is being said.

A Seminal Record

This is a very significant jazz album. Using 3 different bands, Herbie Hancock was able to draw a connective thread that weaves from Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, through Miles Davis to Weather Report, Chick Corea and Wynton Marsalis. The album is a great way to get introduced to a wide variety of jazz styles, And by following these threads, you can find some of the best jazz ever played. I'm very happy that this seminal record has been added to iTunes.

Herbie Hancock will always be one of the most revered and controversial figures in jazz -- just as his employer/mentor Miles Davis was when he was alive. Unlike Miles, who pressed ahead relentlessly and never looked back until near the very end, Hancock has cut a zigzagging forward path, shuttling between almost every development in electronic and acoustic jazz and R&B over the last third of the 20th century and into the 21st. Though grounded in Bill Evans and able to absorb blues, funk, gospel,...
