like Norah Jones? Like Bright Eyes? Like melancholy singers?

Good music for a rainy day in which you feel like emotionally caving in on yourself and becoming incessantly despondent. Orenda (sweet name) mixes the sadness in Conner Oberst's lyrics with the warmth of Norah Jones music. It creates an odd juxtopasition, but a listenable one at least.

A Trip Through The Depths of Humanity

I am a big fan of Azure Ray, so I had to purchase this album along with its cousin, Maria Taylor's "11:11". Both are great in their own accord. But THIS album just BLEW ME AWAY. It is such a diverse record combinding rock and pop elements reminiscent of "New Resolution" (see Bloodline) to new instrumentals, vocals, and lyrical styles that shy away completely from ANYTHING that Azure Ray has previously done (No Evolution, Les Invisibles). At the first listen, I didn't like the whole album, only songs like "Leave it All," "Blood Line," and "Les Invisibles." After another listen, I began to appreciate each song. They are beautiful, soulful, and not your typical love or break-up songs. They really push you to reflect on the lyrics to reflect on humanity. "Money grows to fill the preacher's bank. He saves your soul for himself to take." It's such a deep, emotional LP with wonderful lyrics. Yay Orenda!

inebriated beauty...

Melancholy beauty at its absolute best. Orenda's voice is haunting and consuming and scary-beautiful all in one note. Whole-heartedly recommended.

Although Orenda Fink made her first splash as the songwriting partner of Maria Taylor, she also became a respected bandleader and solo musician in her own right, drawing upon everything from Haitian folk music to pop/rock in the process. Fink and Taylor first launched their partnership as students at the Alabama School of Fine Arts, which led to the formation of Little Red Rocket several years later. When that group disbanded after two albums — 1997's Who Did You Pay and 2000's It's in the...
