Customer Reviews

Old and decently done, but far from the best Iolanthe around

This is a release of an album first released in 1931. As such, it's monaural and sounds rather "flat" compared to younger stereo recordings. The most notable artist in the production is George Baker as the Lord Chancellor, here recording under a pseudonym. Baker was a mainstay of Gilbert and Sullivan recordings for nearly fifty years, so it should be no surprise that he does quite well here, other than breathing in once rather loudly towards the end of the Nightmare Song. Most notable in his performance is the unusually rapid tempo of "When I Went to the Bar." Inasmuch as this is an abridged recording, the overture and many numbers are missing. On the whole, this is a decent recording but is far outshone by other Iolanthes available on the iTunes store. Only people determined to get their hands on as many Gilbert and Sullivan recordings as possible will find this worthwhile.
