Editors’ Notes

After an eight-year hiatus, the original members of Mercyful Fate reunited for 1993’s In the Shadows, which revived the rawness and intensity of the band’s early years. With its pulverizing opening riffs, “Egypt” immediately showed that the group had only become heavier in the intervening years. The combination that made Mercyful Fate famous was the band’s ability to navigate the intricate, meandering riffs of “The Bell Witch” and “Legend of the Headless Rider” without losing an ounce of ferocity. And while the album is full of back-to-basics riffs like “Thirteen Invitations,” Kind Diamond’s lyrical content had matured since the group's early days. While he once wrote simple prayers to Satan, In the Shadows became a showcase for his versatile storytelling. “The Bell Witch,” “The Old Oak,” and “Legend of the Headless Rider” are visions of primordial folklore—a breath of a fresh air for a black metal scene that had become mired in clichés. Lars Ulrich appears as the guest drummer on “Return of the Vampire,” but longtime fans were more excited by “Is That You, Melissa,” which marked the reappearance of the band’s female mascot, who'd not been seen since their 1983 debut.

Customer Reviews

One of Mercyful Fate's most over-looked albums.

This enchanting album of the dark tells us tales of times with melodic metal phrashing and heavy driving riffs from one of the bands that have been well at it for years. This album will capture your imagination and take you into the storys of which King Diamond tells. If you have not experienced the Fate, it's your time.

Packing List for Eternity

Friends, when I die, at an absolute minimum, please pack among my provisions for the journey, the following tracks from this album: Egypt, Shadows.

a classic

There are many rock albums that are classics in my opinion and as well generally acknowledged....Judas Priest Sad Wings of Destiny, Black Sabbath Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Deep Purple Made in Japan, Alice Cooper Billion Dollar Babies etc. this is equal with any and all of them...one of very few recordings that exhibit such consistency of quality throughout. A must for any serious heavy rock fan...

Biography

Formed: 1981 in Copenhagen, Denmark

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Danish band featuring vocalist King Diamond, guitarists Hank Shermann and Michael Denner, bassist Timi Hansen, and drummer Kim Ruzz. Mercyful Fate won a large cult following thanks to their dramatic lyrics, showing a Gothic obsession with evil and the occult, and Diamond's amazing vocal range, which shifted from a low growl to a banshee scream, plus the interplay of Shermann and Denner. The band broke up after two full-length albums owing to differences of opinion about what direction the group should...
