Recorded Live At Marty's, New York City

This CD reissues a full set of music from Mel Tormé with his 1982 trio: pianist Mike Renzi, bassist Jay Leonhart and drummer Donny Osborne. No editing took place except for the excision of some chatter yet the music is consistently rewarding. Tormé, who was already 56, was amazingly just entering his musical prime. His well-paced set mixes together older songs (highlighted by a Fred Astaire medley) with some newer but worthy pieces (including the debut of Tormé's own "I'm Gonna Miss You"), alternating scat-filled romps with lyrical ballad interpretations. Throughout it all Tormé succeeds at everything he tries with a humorous rendition of "I Like to Recognize the Tune" and some heated scatting on "Day In, Day Out" begin among the memorable moments. This CD reissue of an album originally put out on the Flair label is recommended.
BEWARE! This is not the complete version of the recording (for those of you who have the vinyl edition). Missing tracks include the Gerry Mulligan Medley and Noel Coward's "Chase Me Charlie". While Mel Torme is in fine form and the duets with special guests are amazing, the record company is stiffing us.
Mel Torme's "Live at Marty's"
I've been a Mel Torme's fan for years and this is - BY FAR - my favorite recording of his. Great versions of "Pick Yourself Up," "New York State of Mind," and "Fly Me to the Moon" along with some hidden treasures ("Silly Habits," "Take a Letter Miss Jones," & "Mountain Greenery"). I've been looking for this for years in a more current music media format (tape, CD, etc.) and here it is. Enjoy - a steal at 9.99!
Torme at his peak
I literally gasped with excitement to see this had been put on itunes, FINALLY! I got this album when I was 14 and it was what made me an obssessive fan of Mel Torme' ever since. No recording of his matches this. His technique & expressiveness, the arrangements, the song choices, and the thrill of his live performance will make your jaw hit the floor.
