Editors’ Notes

Hemmed in by the conventions of the protest movement and eager to stretch his creative wings, Bob Dylan took an artistic u-turn in 1964 and delivered an album of self-exploration and pure poetic fancy. Another Side Of Bob Dylan is a pivotal work in his canon, the bridge between his folk and electric eras. On its own terms, it ranks among his most diverse and surprising song collections, veering from surreal comedic flights (“Motorpsycho Nitemare”) to playful romantic revelations (“All I Really Want To Do”) and blunt-spoken personal manifestoes (“It Ain’t Me Babe”). Throughout the album, Dylan addresses the expectations of his audience and the demands of his muse. “My Back Pages” is a declaration of independence from political orthodoxy, while the lush, cascading imagery of “Chimes Of Freedom” frames the need for self-liberation in cosmic terms. The youthful certainty of his earlier songs is replaced here by a greater maturity and skepticism. Another Side captures a restless Dylan at the end of his acoustic-strumming troubadour days, working out new ideas before taking the plunge into rock ‘n’ roll. This is the stuff of folk and rock history.

another side of bob dylan

i bought this lp from the Columbia record club in 1964, when a wee lad of 15 (or so) and first listened to it on my aunts console stereo while babysitting for her and my dentist uncle. Their 4 kids were in bed and i was absolutely transfixed by the sounds i heard coming from the large, cabinet speakers... so much so that i did not hear she and my uncle come in from their Sunday night bowling league. "What is that?" she asked, somewhat incredulous. "It's Bob Dylan," i said..... and i never looked back - that was the beginning of the 60's for me. like taking a paddle and pushing a boat off from shore, this album launched my boat into the turbulent and strange waters of the 60's - my next purchases were "Bring it all back Home" and "Highway 61 Revisited", and through lean times and rich i have remained a dylan fan. From the beginning through "John Wesley Harding" you can't go wrong ... after JWH you can pick and choose.

I don't believe it!

I love bob dylan, his songs and everything he writes are bound to be amazing, they have such a great sound to them. Especially, I don't Believe you( she acts like we never met). That is the song that made me look at this album. Even if you dont like the 30 sec clip(believe me, its not the best part of the song) buy the song, if you like his songs, you will love this one.

Forgotten Album

Another Side is filled with plenty of hidden gems. During the midst of a musical transition, Another Side captures some of the first personal lyrics Dylan has written. Spanish Harlem Incident, My Backpages, and To Ramona are highlights of the album.

Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to perform, thereby redefining the vocalist's role in popular music. As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock....
