iTunes Editors’ Notes

Though he’s based in Nashville, Tyler James’ music owes more to classic East Coast pop/rock (as well as Memphis R&B) than anything country. On It Took the Fire the Washington State native offers several revamped tunes from his debut EP along with a brace of new numbers. James harkens back to the sensitive romanticism of the ‘70s singer/songwriter era, building his songs of love and loss around his soulful, slightly melancholy vocal style and adept keyboard work. Tracks like “Don’t Leave” and “Down To The Garden” are tender and elegant, carried by flowing piano lines and accented by swooning strings. James picks up the beat with the billowing “Stay Humble” and luxuriates in sophisticated theater-pop on “A Sailor’s Tune.” Of special interest is “All I Got,” a sensuous old-school soul number delivered by James with yearning rather than swagger. “Coattails To Tennessee” is probably his hardest-rocking moment here. It Took a Fire balances sincerity with craftsmanship without strain. Fans of everyone from Paul McCartney to John Mayer will find much to enjoy in James’ warm, richly melodic music.

Absolutely great album.

I've got to agree - this is one of those artists who's albums you don't mind buying. Up and coming talent with a great ability to write and a voice which tailors to the song and subject matter. Hope he makes it.

His journey actually started in 2001, but record company monkey business prevented James from getting his shot until a 2004 deal with Island Records and the infectious "Why Do I Do?" A few more singles followed, including "Just Around the...
