Editors’ Notes

In 1992, when this recording was awarded a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Folk category, the music industry finally woke up to something we've known for two decades: John Prine is a genius. Few songwriters can pull your leg and tug at your heart the way Prine can, and few can tell a story of blue-collar struggle in such vivid detail. The Missing Years is simply more proof of Prine's skill, a collection of brilliant songs full of melodic charm, lyrical magic, and emotional impact.

The title says it all. Just one listen and you will be convinced. There has never been a more compelling singer/songwriter. Ever since high school, I have been following this musical genius. I turn fifty this year. Timeless - "just like way back then"

John Prine has the most brilliant lyrics I have ever heard. His songs make the whole world make sense. The simplicity and art in the music makes me not need to know anything or worry more about how things will happen in the future. A good stress-reliever as well as amazing music and lyric. I love this album and also the rest of Prine's music.

An acclaimed singer/songwriter whose literate work flirted with everything from acoustic folk to rockabilly to straight-ahead country, John Prine was born October 10, 1946, in Maywood, IL. Raised by parents firmly rooted in their rural Kentucky background, at age 14 Prine began learning to play the guitar from his older brother while taking inspiration from his grandfather, who had played with Merle Travis.
