Album Review

The most visible practitioners of neo-doo wop a cappella vocals top themselves with this stunning holiday package. Their delivery is crisp; their arrangements are fresh; their original material is polished and spirited; the feeling projected alternates between sentimental, playful, and buoyant...frankly, there's nothing negative to say about Comfort & Joy. Highlights include a beautiful bass vocal showcase on "I'll Be Home for Christmas," an extraordinary trombone section evocation on "Home for the Holidays," the breathtaking vocal rhythm groove on "Snowstar," and the most obvious nod toward doo wop tradition, complete with a tongue-in-cheek confessional recitation on "Please Come Home for Christmas." But each track, in its own way, sparkles. Unlike almost every holiday release in recent years, this one should last for many seasons to come. ~ Robert L. Doerschuk, Rovi

Harmonic warmth

The old Carpenters holiday song "Merry Christmas Darling" is given a fresh take. Rockapella's tight harmonies and soulful performance turns this tune into a new Christmas classic. What a great gift for the holidays!

feel good!

Not as good as their other Xmas release, but still 5 stars if you're a fan. Their sound and sense of humor matches the spirit of the holidays for me.

The group was formed during the mid-'80s by Brown University students Sean Altman (tenor) and Elliott Kerman (baritone), who met while members of the school's male a cappella ensemble the High Jinks. They soon formed a spin-off street corner group dubbed the Lunchtime Specials, gradually evolving into Rockapella -- although other members came and...
