iTunes Review

The Police smoothed out the punk edges for their 1979 sophomore album. Sting’s tenor vocals and reggae-jazz basslines, Stewart Copeland’s precise, dub-influenced drumming, and Andy Summers' tangy guitar arpeggios created a sound that hadn’t been heard before—from the hypnotic dub-drone of “Deathwish” to the weirdly uplifting melancholia of “Walking on the Moon” to the robotic, tempo-shifting “Contact.” “Message in a Bottle” remarkably conveys a sense of space (and loneliness) inside of so much rock-reggae splendor. The entire album works kind of like that.

Amazing

For all the people who think The Police aren't talented......this album will prove you wrong...

Regatta de Blanc

This is, in my opinion, the best Police album. It's one of a small handful of albums that I can listen to from start to finish without ever wanting to skip past a song. The only one that I even think about skipping is Message In a Bottle, but that's just because I've heard it so many times.

Give more than the singles a chance.

If you only listen to "Every Breath", "Every Little Thing", Roxanne", etc. you are missing out on a lot of great music. Try a song like "Deathwish" or "Bring On The Night" from this album for something just as good as the standard radio clasics. Buy the album and just let it play from end to end. If you like The Police enough to be checking out individual songs from their albums then you will not go wrong diving into their great 2nd disc. Actually you won't go wrong getting all of their stuff (you don't make the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame for nothing).

Nominally, the Police were punk rock, but that's only in the loosest sense of the term. The trio's nervous, reggae-injected pop/rock was punky, but it wasn't necessarily punk. All three members were considerably more technically proficient than the average punk or new wave band. Andy Summers had a precise guitar attack that created dense, interlocking waves of sounds and effects. Stewart Copeland could play polyrhythms effortlessly. And Sting, with his high, keening voice, was capable of constructing...
