Editors’ Notes

The darlings of Athens, Georgia may not have single-handedly pushed college rock to the forefront of '80s pop, but it's hard to imagine it happening without them. And when this 1987album yielded not only the ironic, uncharacteristically upbeat fave "It's theEnd of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)," but also the band's first bona fide Top Ten pop hit with the bittersweet ballad "The One I Love." Producer Scott Litt's subtle mainstreaming of the band's sound here is an obvious plus. But it is the willingness of creative mainstays Peter Buck and Michael Stipe to tinker ambitiously with the band's sonic ethos, pushing it beyond the jangly, often lyrically opaque formula into more emotionally compelling territory that help Document pay its richest dividends. Other key tracks: "Finest Worksong," "King of Birds"

Perhaps the best album REM ever produced and one of the greatest albums of all time in the rock genre.

One of R.E.M.s best

This is my favorite R.E.M. record. I say "record" is because I own a promotional copy. It was sent out tot the press and radio stations to help promote the album back in 1987. I think this album is one of R.E.M.'s best. My favorite track on here would have to be "The One I Love". I just love (no pun intended) the way the guitar sounds in that song. I wish more people would like this album like I do. "Welcome to the Operation", "Finest Worksong", "Fireplace" are all awesome tracks. Buy it!

While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
